In 1999, I began my college journey at age 17, as a first-generation college student and an emancipated teenager after some time in the foster care system. Throughout my college career, I have faced significant challenges. Housing and food insecurity, incarcerated and missing relatives, exploitation, medical and safety emergencies. Despite these obstacles, in 2007, I completed my first B.A. in Philosophy, 15 credits shy of a Double Major in Media Studies. In 2009, I completed a M.A. in Peace Education. Ever since, I have balanced work in arts, radio production, and in anti-trafficking—while carrying considerable hardship. In 2025, budget cuts resulted in the end of my decade long career in Direct Victim Services. With that behind me, in 2026 I am finally ready to complete my media major!
For years, I was hesitant, as there are no Pell grants or scholarships available for a second B.A. Every credit must be paid out of pocket. It was not until 2024 that I paid off my prior degrees. Still, completing the major is important to me. While philosophy has given me a strong foundation for peace education and research—media studies will help me build a sustainable career in ethical storytelling. I have been a radio producer since 2001—first at WMPG and now producing for Maine Public and WUCF, serving communities across the State of Maine, Central Florida, and nationally. I am also the founder of a small, grassroots nonprofit organization producing art and peace education.
My work in public media and more specifically in radio is dedicated to music and cultural preservation, education, and supporting, building, and maintaining safe communities. To bring my very best to this work—I’ve decided to complete a second B.A. in Media Studies, with a concentration in Production. Initially, I was told I needed 15 credits. However—after beginning this process I was told I need 30 to complete the second B.A. The full tuition is estimated at $8,640. Every donation—no matter how small—will help pay for this upfront.
